Folk Appetizer

There are two meadows wide and green A fence is running in between And the horses on one side are all healthy They have perfect shiny coats And a bucket full of oats In terms of equine assets they are all wealthy But every day they're tied to someone else's rope A riding crop's enough to make them give up hope Is that the life for me? I don't think I could cope Nope That's why I'm sitting on the fence And over on the other side Are horses running far and wide They are proud and they will answer to no one They are wild as the breeze As it whistles through the trees There is beauty in their unbridled motion But when the winter comes there's hardly food at all There's no retreating to the safety of the stall Don't think I'll answer when I hear Jack London's call, y'all That's why I'm sitting on the fence There's no alternative - it's how it's always been You're fat and burdened or unburdened and too thin So either way you go they're going to fence you in, when You gotta wear the saddle if you wanna get the apple But you can't enjoy the apple if you only wear the saddle But you gotta wear the saddle if you wanna get the apple But you can't enjoy the apple if you only wear the saddle That's why I'm sitting on the fence

Dear Madonna, You were everything that a girl would want to be All the junior high boys worshipped you and wouldn't notice me You told Dick Clark you'd rule the world Reigning queen, material girl Seeking Susan desperately CHORUS: Do you breathe easy? Do you feel like the monkey's off your back? Do you dream that your life is just a movie? And now that you're big, can you relax? Dear Madonna, You express yourself in the top ten every time I hope you live to sell your secrets - I wanna be the first in line Blonde ambition's all you need Dirty books for us to read Whatever keeps you on our minds CHORUS Me and my band, we want to know How is the view up there at the top? I understand that once you begin To reinvent yourself, you don't stop Holding on tight to the brass ring Are you afraid that you might drop? And is it worth the sacrifices you have made? Dear Madonna, I read somewhere that you're tired of your fame You wish all your fans would back away from the car and clear the lane You are bored with interviews You are sick of making news But you've got no one else to blame If you don't breathe easy If you don't feel like the monkey's off your back Do you dream that your life's a scary movie? And now that you're big Now that you're big Now that you're big, can you relax?

Feels like I'm headed for a Gotham City breakdown The water level's rising up above the whole town I'm like a minnow in the world's biggest fishbowl I think I'm headed for the darkest night of my soul I turn and paddle more...can't even see the shore I'm in a whirlpool of city and I'm losing my mind Feels like I'm headed for a Gotham City breakdown My head is spinning on this urban merry-go-round The bumper cars are lining every avenue now The carnival is just an overcrowded zoo now And everybody's rude...I need some solitude We gotta stop this roller coaster 'cause I'm losing my mind We've got to break from Gotham while there's still a way out of town We've got to break from Gotham City 'cause if we don't break this party up Then any day now Gotham City's gonna break us down Feels like I'm headed for a Gotham City breakdown Somebody kicked me off the stairway to the high ground Nobody listens to the song I want to sing here Nobody gives a particular four-letter word beginning with "s" and ending with "t" about a single thing here I'm sliding down a hill...though I am standing still The world is spinning all around me and I'm losing my mind We've got to break from Gotham while there's still a way out of town We've got to break from Gotham City 'cause if we don't break this party up Then any day now Gotham City's gonna break us down

about

This was a promo EP we released in early 2001, just in time for the International Folk Alliance conference in Vancouver; as with "Just The Three Of Us (live)," this 4-song CD was an attempt to get more bookings in the folk market, which was our most promising touring circuit at the time. It worked! By summer, we were living in a van.

about

GrooveLily Seattle, Washington

Bicoastal trio GrooveLily inhabits that contemporary space where creative musicians ignore the boundaries laid down by words like rock, folk, jazz and pop. The success of their first concert-musical, the critically-acclaimed holiday show STRIKING 12, has led them farther into the world of theatre, where they have carved out a unique niche as a rock band writing and performing shows. ... more
