about
A cheery song about three people who wanted to fly, and died. Icarus, the lawnchair man (who committed suicide years later) and a (possibly fictional) woman who thought she was experiencing the beginning of the rapture, when in fact she was seeing a long haired guy (not Jesus) raising up his hands in despair when a truckload of helium-filled blow-up dolls escaped from the back of his pickup.

lyrics
got the wings
got the feathers
got the wood and wax to hold 'em together
Daddy said
"don't go higher
'cause you're such an inexperienced flyer"
that’s when Icarus told his father
"it's such a beautiful day…
up, up and away
I've always been aching to fly
up, up and away
I've got clearance for takeoff and I'm kissing the earth goodbye"
got balloons
got a lawn chair
got a CB and a BB gun up there
holding tight
to his pipe dream
with the air around him colder than ice cream
Larry looks at the clouds below him
the lining’s silver, not grey…
up, up and away
he's always been aching to fly
up, up and away
he's got clearance for takeoff and he's kissing the earth goodbye…
but most of us aren't so brave
we gaze at the sky
fearful of falling
and all that we can do is stand here and wave
Interstate 37
she sees a dozen souls ascending to heaven
through the sun roof
Georgeanne stands up
she thinks she's seeing Jesus raising his hands up
and as she leaps into freeway traffic
somebody hears the girl say
"up, up and away
I've always been aching to fly
up, up and away
I've got clearance for takeoff and I'm kissing the earth goodbye..."
